This collaboration seeks to align the demand for skilled workers in the UK with the supply of skilled professionals in India, particularly in labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, under the India-UK Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement (MMPA).

A senior government official revealed that during a recent India-UK MMPA joint working group meeting, the Ministry of Labor and Employment highlighted the importance of cross-border job matching and skill gap narrowing. This approach ensures the safe and regular migration of skilled workers between the two nations. The Indian delegation included representatives from the ministries of External Affairs, Skills Development & Entrepreneurship, Home Affairs, Education, and Labor & Employment.

The projected demand for skilled workers across various countries is staggering. For instance, Saudi Arabia and the UAE each anticipate a need for one million skilled workers, while the US and Canada foresee 390,000 and 320,000 vacancies, respectively. Meanwhile, the UK projects 16,000 vacancies by 2029 out of a total of 3.58 million job openings across 16 countries (NSDC International, 2023).

India’s ambition extends to having UK employers post job vacancies on the NCS portal, thereby facilitating easier workforce mobility through an international reference classification for occupations under the International Labor Organization. Furthermore, India emphasized the necessity of a Social Security Agreement (SSA) with the UK to safeguard the welfare of international migrant workers.

The 2021 Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement between India and the UK underscores this collaborative effort. It aims to enhance legal and orderly migration of students and skilled professionals, prevent immigration abuses, and ensure the return of illegal residents.
